Selective Adoption Fundamentals

Adjusting PeopleSoft 9.2 Maintenance

For more than two decades, PeopleSoft followed the industry standard for how to deliver new application functionality to customers. The periodic delivery of massive application upgrades which were difficult and costly to apply was a model which customers had no choice but to accept. Internally, IT Departments and Line of Business system owners took up battle positions over upgrade scheduling. IT, which controlled the resources, would hold out for as long as possible to avoid committing time and money to an arduous PeopleSoft upgrade while Business owners would track and monitor fixes and enhancements delivered in new releases to build a business case in their favor.

Cloud Manager for PeopleSoft Coming to Oracle Marketplace

At the recent PeopleSoft Summit at Oracle Headquarters, a very interesting product called PeopleSoft Cloud Manager was demonstrated. The name might change, and no release dates were given. But the product looked mature (for a 1.0 release), and may prove of great value to customers who plan to keep running PeopleSoft applications for a while, but also want to enjoy the time and cost savings derived from automation and cloud processing.

Using Customization Repository with PeopleSoft Update Manager

Customization Repository on the PUM Source

Since the release of PeopleSoft’s 9.2 applications and PeopleTools 8.53, PeopleSoft Update Manager has been used to selectively choose patches and new functionality to apply to your existing PeopleSoft environments. Using Update Manager, administrators can search and select desired updates and allow the tool to build a comprehensive package which includes all necessary prerequisites and excludes updates which require a higher PeopleTools release than is available on the target environment. But if the PUM Instance is on a different database platform and/or PeopleTools release from the target, a compare using Application Designer cannot be run so you need another way to identify potential conflicts with customized objects prior to creating and exporting the change package. This is the function of the Customization Repository.

Oracle Enhances PeopleSoft Cumulative Feature Overview

For several years now, Oracle has been providing the bug fix and new functionality catalog known as the Cumulative Feature Overview (CFO) tool. This tool is designed to simplify the process of identifying which fixes and new features are available in each release. For customers who have upgraded to application release 9.2, the CFO tools facilitates Selective Adoption by providing convenient access to a comprehensive list of fixes and functionality in each new PeopleSoft 9.2 Image, allowing application business owners to work with technical staff to efficiently identify the features available to be adopted.

3 Challenges to Automated PeopleSoft Testing

Top 3 Challenges to Automated PeopleSoft Testing

Many organizations have tried to automate their PeopleSoft testing over the years, because manual testing is very time consuming and expensive. Few have succeeded.

At most organizations, the story about automated PeopleSoft testing is simple: "It's too hard for users to maintain test scripts."

There are three reasons this way of thinking has become common:

  1. Upgrades
  2. Lack of consistent process, procedures, and metrics
  3. Use of ill-suited test tools

PeopleSoft Update Manager and PeopleSoft Testing

Selective Adoption and PeopleSoft Testing

As a technology, the PeopleSoft Update Manager (PUM) has proven to be solid and reliable for Financials and HCM, and is now also available with Campus Solutions. PUM does streamline the maintenance process, and makes it easier for customers to stay current, (or get current regardless of prior release levels). And, no more upgrades.

But PUM does not simply automate the old patch, bundle, maintenance pack update process. New functionality and features are co-mingled with traditional fixes and updates. Again, this delivery of new features has worked well from a technical perspective. Selective Adoption pick the features (and fixes) you want, when you want them – changes the application management process. Somebody from the business has to work with development and together decide what updates to include, and when.

This requires an "attitude change" for most organizations, and probably more collaboration. Changes are smaller (than an upgrade), but more frequent. New images  there have been 17 for Financials in the last two and a half years – require a quicker pace, and may change roles in the supporting organization.
